How the Personality Chart Works

Every Mii in Tomodachi Life is assigned one of 16 personality types based on four slider values set during character creation. These sliders — Movement, Speech, Energy, and Attitude — each range from 1 to 8, and the game combines them to place your Mii on a 4×4 personality chart.

The Four Sliders

Movement (Slow → Quick): Determines how fast your Mii walks around the island. This is the only slider that has a direct, visible effect beyond personality assignment.

Speech (Polite → Direct): Influences how your Mii communicates with others. More direct Miis tend to speak bluntly, while polite Miis choose their words carefully.

Energy (Flat → Intense): Controls the expressiveness of your Mii's animations and reactions. High-energy Miis are animated and dramatic; low-energy Miis are calm and subdued.

Attitude (Serious → Relaxed): Shapes your Mii's general outlook on life. Serious Miis focus on responsibility and duty, while relaxed Miis take things as they come.

How the Grid Works

Movement + Speech are added together to produce a score from 0 to 14 (each slider value minus 1). This total determines which column your Mii occupies: Considerate (0–3), Reserved (4–7), Outgoing (8–11), or Ambitious (12–15).

Energy + Attitude work the same way, determining the row. Together, the column and row pinpoint one of 16 cells on the personality chart.

What About Overall?

The Overall slider (Normal → Quirky) is visible during Mii creation but has no effect on personality calculation. It only changes some cosmetic animation details. You can set it to any value without worrying about it changing your Mii's type.
