Mechanics That Actually Changed (Not Just Names)
Most of the headlines about Living the Dream focus on the renamed personality types, but a few actual mechanics shifted too. The biggest is the new color palette system. Each personality group now has its own color set that affects clothing options, house interiors, and the Profile Cards your Miis hand out. So two Miis with different personalities will look visibly different even before you touch their outfits. The Overall slider also got fixed. On 3DS it was reversed, so pushing it toward Normal actually counted as Quirky and the other way around. The Switch version points the right direction at last, which clears up years of confusion on fan forums. Personality now feeds into cheering up too. When an islander gets sad, the right friend to send over depends partly on personality type, so it's no longer a coin flip. Beyond that, the changes are mostly quality-of-life polish rather than new systems. The core loop hasn't changed.
Should You Replay It on Switch?
If you sank dozens of hours into the 3DS version, the honest answer is that Living the Dream will feel familiar rather than transformative. The personality chart is identical, the apartments work the same way, and the daily rhythm of feeding and befriending your Miis is unchanged. What you're paying for is a fresh coat of paint, the color palette system, the corrected Overall slider, and the personality-based cheering up. None of that is a dealbreaker if you wanted more Tomodachi in your life, but it's not a sequel in the usual sense either. This port is really aimed at two groups. First, people who never owned a 3DS and missed the original. Second, returning players who want to rebuild their island on a console they still play. If you're still happy with your 3DS, there's no urgent reason to switch. Wait for a sale if you're on the fence.
Save Data and Transferring Miis
There's no way to transfer your 3DS save file or your Miis directly to Living the Dream. The two versions don't talk to each other, and Nintendo hasn't added any transfer tool. That means your original island, your relationships, and any Miis you spent hours tweaking are stuck on the 3DS. If the hardware dies, that save is gone for good, so back it up to an SD card while you still can. The workaround on Switch is to rebuild from scratch. The fastest path is to use the Mii Maker or import Miis from your Nintendo Account, then re-enter the slider values for each personality you want to recreate. If you wrote down or screenshotted your old slider recipes, recreating the same personalities takes only a few minutes per Mii. The friendships won't carry over though. Treat it as a fresh start, not a continuation.
